Chauncey Moulding is a career prosecutor and public servant who has served as Jefferson County Attorney since 2019. An attorney since 2015, Chauncey has built his career around public safety, criminal justice, and the practical demands of rural prosecution. He believes rural communities deserve steady, consistent leadership, and that victims of crime deserve a justice system that is responsive, fair, and effective.

Before becoming Jefferson County Attorney, Chauncey served as a judicial law clerk for the judges of Iowa’s 8th Judicial District, then worked as a prosecutor in Keokuk and Washington Counties. He brings extensive courtroom experience, including felony jury trial work and the investigation and prosecution of serious cases involving narcotics, weapons trafficking, crimes against children, and homicide. His work reflects the realities facing rural Iowa: limited resources, substance-related crime, and the need for strong coordination among prosecutors, law enforcement, county officials, and community partners. For Chauncey, rural problems require rural solutions.

Transparency, accountability, and public trust are central to Chauncey’s approach. As the legal authority for Jefferson County, he works closely with county leaders to provide practical solutions, promote efficiency, and keep county government accessible and focused on results. Chauncey’s commitment to service began before his legal career. In 2003, as the war in Iraq unfolded, he felt called to serve his country. Guided by a desire to save lives, he joined the United States Coast Guard, serving in intelligence and counter-narcotics roles in the Pacific and Central America.

Chauncey earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and his Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota. After law school, he chose to return home to Iowa to raise his family and continue serving the communities that shaped him.
